| Software Description Garmin's United States TOPO MapSource CD-ROM is similar to U.S. Geological Survey 1:100,000-scale topographic paper maps. It includes trip and waypoint management functions that allow you to transfer waypoints, routes, and tracks between your PC and nearly all Garmin GPS units (excluding the GPS 100 family and panel-mount aviation units). With MapSource, you can view highways, roads, hiking trails, snowmobile trails, backwoods trails, elevation contours, point and summit elevations, some bathymetric contours, geographic names, churches, and schools. Shoreline detail is included for lakes, reservoirs, small bodies of water, waterways, rivers, and streams. Icons represent boat ramps, dams, marinas, campgrounds, public facilities, mile markers, first aid stations, picnic sites, swimming areas, ski areas, wrecks, fuel locations, and dangerous and restricted areas. |

Updates... The topographical software is good but not great. I think you've probably already figured that out from the other reviews. ^M
Very Outdated New Hampshire Maps I just purchased this software with a Garmin eTrac Legend. I drove to the Seacoast down many major highways that were not on the map even though they are 10 to 15 years old. On my Garmin, I am always north of the features on the map, I don't know if this is a map error or a GPS error. The Mapsource software on the cd is old by several versions. The new software is free online. You do get what you pay for, this software is not expensive, but it is not very good on detail either.
USA TOPO - Good coverage, poor resolution This product is a handy way to load up the topos you need for whatever trip you are planning. I recently uploaded some topos onto my GPS unit and took them on a multi-day river trip. The maps were adequate to tell me where on the river I was, with some of the undeveloped campgrounds even listed. However being 1:100000, the detail was poor and the contours had unusual intervals like a 337 foot contour, just below a 349 foot contour. I suspect it is a metric to english conversion thing. The other thing that was clunky about the software is that feature labels are fixed, so that unless you are zoomed way out, often you cannot tell the name of a creek, river, lake, or road without scrolling all around to find it. Overall, it was worth the money for the coverage, but was not an exceptional product. Garmin should really add 1:25000 topos to its software selection, even if you had to buy them individually or by state, it would still be worth it. |
